Farewell Mags, you will be missed.

For the past 13 years, Mags McInerney has trained the 4th, 5th and 6th class girls’ basketball teams. She recently announced that this year will be her last in the school.  We are very sad to see Mags go but we count ourselves very lucky to have had such a wonderful and caring coach for as long as we did.

We wanted to show our appreciation for all the hard work, love and care that she has given to us throughout the years so at assembly last week we had a presentation for Mags. This included a basketball that was signed by all of the players and a book of appreciation which included a note of thanks from each girl. It was an emotional and memorable day for all. Check out the photos below. We wish Mags all the best for the future.

“Fireswift”

We got some great news in our classroom a few weeks ago. Ellie Rooney won a competition to name the new Fire and Rescue Boat in Limerick. She had chosen the name “Fireswift”.

Ellie was invited to an occasion at Steamboat Quay to celebrate her win. The Mayor of Limerick helped her to reveal the name in front of a big crowd. She got a chance to sit into the boat and have some photos taken. She was interviewed by the radio and some newspapers. Of course Ellie did us and her family proud.

Then came a big surprise for Ellie. She was presented with an IPAD Mini!!

Ellie, her family and teachers were invited to the Clarion for some refreshments. We all had a great afternoon.

Here are a few photos of the beautiful sunny afternoon…….fireswift 1 fireswift 2 fireswift 3 fireswift 4 fireswift 5 fireswift 6 fireswift 7

The singers, readers and all of 6th class took part with confidence. Bishop Brendan Leahy was very impressed.

A big thank you to everyone involved…. The children and their parents, Ms. Dooley Ryan, Ms. Sheedy, Ms. Murphy, Fr. Ryan, Anna Lehane, Pat Egan, Collette Davis and the Principal and Teachers from JFK.

Easter Bonnet

On Friday 27th March, the Parent Association organised an Easter Bonnet Competition for all the girls. The bonnet’s had to be designed or created by themselves. The girls enjoyed making these and the standard was amazing. There are a lot of talented girls in the school and it showed in the way they designed their hats. The judges found it very difficult to pick winners. Well done to all to took part and a big thank you to all the Judges and the Parents Association for organising this fun event.

4th Class Poetry Competition

  • Congratulations to Ava Dorman who won third prize in a DSCF8942recent poetry competition. As part of the competition the children were asked to write a poem which followed the format of a Limerick.Winning poems were going to be printed in a new book “Poem and Place: Limerick and the Limerick”.
  • A Limerick is a cleverly versed short poem. It is made up of 5 lines. Lines 1, 2 & 5 have 9 syllables and rhyme with each other. Lines 3 & 4 have 6 syllables and rhyme with each other. Children were asked to write a poem which followed the format outlined above and had Limerick as the main theme. We were delighted when we received a letter to say that Ava’s poem had been chosen to be published in the book.
  • On Thursday 19th of March Ava was invited to the launch of the book which was produced by Limerick Archives as part of Limerick City of Culture. The main idea behind this book was to establish the link between County Limerick and the style of poetry known as the Limerick.
  • Ava was presented with a copy of the book in which her poem was published and she also collected a copy of the book for the school. Well done Ava. We are very proud of you.
  • Below you will find a copy of Ava’s beautifully written poem. Ava was commended on the day of the presentation for how well her poem followed the format of the Limerick.

There is a girl from Limerick city,

She went abroad, it was a pity.

But then she came back broke,

She was dressed in a cloak,

Now she is sitting down and pretty.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

We are currently celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge. We kicked off our celebrations last Friday with the Féile. Each class learned a poem as gaeilge and then we recited it in front of an adjudicator . Lots of our parent came to hear us recite our poem. The adjudicator was very impressed with us and told us we were” ar fheabhas”. Obviously we couldn’t all be winners but as all our teachers reminded us it’s the taking part that’s important.Tomorrow the winners of the Séanfhocal competition will be announced and on Friday we will all take part in a Tráth na gCeist. We love celebrating our language and our culture.

Here are some of our Féile winners.
